Chaudhury, Iffat Jahan
The study examines the International aspects that IELTS claims as an International English
Language Testing System. Basically, this paper examines the appropriacy of IELTS as an
International test in Bangladeshi context. The research sites were two different coaching centers
of Dhaka city, Saifurs and Mantors coaching centres. The research objectives were to find out
whether the testing system confirms the “International” aspects that IELTS claims or not and to
discover how the Internationality of a proficiency test like IELTS affects the learning system as
well as passing process of students. Both qualitative and quantitative methods have been
incorporated in the study in analyzing the data. Different instruments such as teacher
questionnaire, student questionnaire have been used to generate data. The findings indicate
inappropriacy of IELTS as an International test. This study does not confirm the International
aspects that IELTS claims it contains. According to this study, IELTS recognize Inner circle
aspects rather than global aspects. Few recommendations have been given for the educators and
the testing authorities to overcome the problems that IELTS still has to be a truly International
test .

Critiquing Bangladeshi Newspapers’ Editorials: A CDA Perspective
Shaheed, Farzana
Newspaper-editorials manufacture consent of influential groups of people (scholars, intellectuals,
policy makers, politicians and administrators) in a particular country (Rahman and Akhter,
2002). Though a newspaper’s uniqueness and stance is determined by its editorial in the market
and society, the language composed here indirectly disseminates its ideology to its target readers
(Van Dijk, 1996). This qualitative research elucidates some scarcely explored concerns of the
editorial section of a newspaper; such as - semantic structure of the designed language, exercise
of implicit power behind the language ( see Fairclough, 2001), holistic dimension of editors’
ideologies, validation of the title, techniques of presenting proposals, implications of key
terminologies and justification of editors’ presupposition (Van Dijk,1998). These issues will help
to find where editorials’ language is creating hegemony; while building peoples’ values, norms,
beliefs, and practices in a state. This research analyzes 48 pieces of editorials from four
newspapers (with the names) in Bangladesh. The study employs principles of Critical Discourse
Analysis (CDA) (see Fairclough and Wodak, 1997: 271-80), Van Dijk’s (1998) “Socio Cognitive
Approach” and model of linguistic analysis of newspapers’ editorials by Fowler (1991). This
study has also shown some basic ideas of various western schools of philosophies which exist in
the themes of Bangladeshi newspapers’ editorials.
This interdisciplinary research will benefit the people related to the field of English, Mass
Communication and Journalism, Bangla, Psychology, Philosophy, Political Science, Economics
and Social Science too.
The findings indicate newspapers’ editorials have still remained an unenthusiastic segment for
most of the readers who regularly read newspaper. Editorials’ language is diplomatically composed to satisfy every party for commercial success. In Bangladesh, mainstream readers of
newspapers somehow keep overlooking this segment whereas year after year writers of editorials
are claiming their superior status.

Bourgeois were always the favorite topic of the philosophers, novelists, poets
and playwrights. Some writers have dealt with the subject of bourgeois in a serious
manner; on the other hand, some have treated the topic and the bourgeois in satiric
way. Bourgeois were well treated in the writing of the satirists, specifically in the play
of the satirists. Among them Yasmina Reza’s name is worth mentioning because
through her plays the bourgeois of the postmodern era have come into light with their
values, instinct and limitations. This dissertation paper aims to work on two plays of
Reza, namely, Art and God of Carnage to find out if Reza’s plays are faithful picture
of Bourgeois in Europe. For better understanding of her plays some theories, such as,
Marxism, Postmodernism, Poststructuralism and Deconstruction are applied. In the
first chapter of this paper Marxism has been discussed; in the second chapter
Postmodernism, Poststructuralism and Deconstruction have been discussed; and in the
third chapter, Art and God of Carnage are discussed in details and theories mentioned
above are applied. Through these discussions the result is drawn, that is, Yasmina
Reza’s plays are faithful picture of bourgeois in Europe.

Rahman, Zarin Tasnim
This is the era of globalization and English is the language of this globalizing process. It
illustrates the interdependence of nations. English is the one and only language that operates as a
medium to create deep interrelation between countries. So the importance of English can be
assumed effortlessly. As a developing country Bangladesh needs to keep pace with the outside
world. In order to do that our country depends on English because it is an international language.
Almost all the official tasks are performed here in English along with Bangla. The need for using
English is undeniable. English is widely used in every nook and corner of our country.
Nowadays English and employability have become very closely related. Currently it
seems that learning English has become vital to keep up interaction in this contemporary world.
So it is essential to explore how English affects the way people get jobs. The intention of my
study is to find out to what extent English communication skills and employability are
connected. I will gradually demonstrate how English plays a very significant and vibrant role in
getting employed.
To find out if there is actually any relationship between English and employability, a
survey was conducted to collect data. 202 respondents participated in the survey. A questionnaire
was given to each of them and they filled it out with their experience. The survey was
anonymous and it was conducted among students and job holders of different universities and
government and private organizations. They also provided their valuable comments in the
comments section about their perspective of getting jobs through English communication skills.
Upon the analysis of the obtained data, the research findings indicate that English
communication skills undoubtedly helps to get better jobs and knowledge of English increases
employability. The study also gives a glimpse of our educational condition and the problems the students face in their learning period. The investigation concluded with recommendations for
new measures, which will help students to overcome obstacles while learning English and it will
also help them to get prepared for better jobs.
