Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to evaluate the cytotoxic, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of aqueous fraction of Syzygium samarangense leaf (Family: Myrataceae) extract.
The powder of Syzygium samarangense leaf were extracted with methanol and then partitioned with n-hexane, DCM, and ethyl acetate was taken for experiment. The aqueous fraction was used to evaluate cytotoxic, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. The cytotoxic activity was measured by brine shrimp lethality bioassay. LC50 value of aqueous fraction of Syzygium samarangense was 1.64 μg/ml in brine shrimp lethality test. The fraction contained 117.8125 mg AAE/g of total phenolic content and 2.339623 mg AAE/g of total flavonoid content. The results of study clearly indicate the presence of cytotoxic and poor antioxidant properties of aqueous extract. The obtained results provide a support for the use of this plant in traditional medicine and its further investigation.
